Used nuclear fuel coming from Italy to France

According to the contract signed between SOGIN (Italian acronym for Company for the Management of Nuclear Facilities in Italy) and AREVA, and following intergovernmental agreements between France and Italy, part of the used fuel from Italian nuclear power plants is sent to France for reprocessing.
In accordance with these commitments, a shipment of four casks containing used fuel has left the Italian nuclear power plant (NPP) of Caorso on June 20, 2010. It could reach the TN International railway terminal located in Valognes from June 22, 2010.
This shipment will be the last one for Caorso NPP used fuel elements. Sixteen shipments corresponding to 61 casks will have been realised to evacuate the 190 tons of Caorso NPP used fuel.
Next shipments will leave from the Avogadro storage site located in Piemont.
This operation fully complies with national and international regulations.
