Australian organization ANSTO contracts with COGEMA for reprocessing
Press release
November 15, 1999
Under a recently signed contract, COGEMA will provide expertise and know-how in spent fuel management to the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO). The contract calls for the reprocessing of 1,300 spent fuel elements from ANSTO's Lucas Height reactor at COGEMA's La Hague plant.
This contract is part of a bilateral Franco-Australian agreement on nuclear materials transfers, which was recently supplemented by an exchange of letters on the transfer of spent fuel from the ANSTO reactor to France for reprocessing.
The waste resulting from reprocessing will be conditioned and returned to Australia, as required by French law and by the terms of the contract.
