Treatment of all Japanese used fuel to continue
Brief
November 17, 2004
In a November 12 decision, the Japanese Atomic Energy Commission upheld the current "all-treatment" policy. Fuel that cannot be treated at the Rokkasho Mura treatment plant nearing completion will be placed in interim storage.
A decision on their disposition will be made after 2010. JNFL and the utilities must put their plutonium recycling program on record before used fuel may be treated. Issues concerning the use of plutonium remain to be resolved.
